When this show first came on the scene I was pretty excited. Seeing black women in position of power is just liberating. And Judge Lola is a badass. The second season just started and it blew my mind. Lola stands up for a 14 year old girl who is being detained by a police officer during a BLM protest.
The officer pulls out and points his gun at them.
Mark (Lola's prosecutor childhood best friend) comes to her aid. Pretty straight forward. However it gets deep when Mark asks Lola what she did to upset police. This causes a riff between the two friends who grew up together. And the dialogue is pretty powerful.
Mark feels there's a rift and confronts Lola. Which at first she doesn't want to get into it. But then she lets it out that she feels disrespected by him. And he doesn't get it. She goes on to explain that he assumed she'd done something wrong (you'll have to watch to get the full dialogue).
What's genius about this episode is it brings forth what we're all currently struggling with...racism. And the complexities even within our close relationships. The importance of communication and patience.
